The largest national forest in Utah, the Dixie covers almost 2 million acres in southwestern Utah. The Forest's landscapes range from red rock canyons and desert ecosystems to aspen and conifer forests on mountains topping 11,000 feet.

Attractions include Red Canyon (a smaller version of Bryce NP), Boulder Mountain's scenic alpine lakes, Navajo Lake and nearby Cascade Falls, PAnguitch Lake (a favorite for anglers), the Pine Valley Mountains near St. George, and Hell's Backbone Bridge, built by the CCC in 1933, which offers breathtaking views of the Box-Death Hollow Wilderness. There are two other wilderness areas on the Dixe: Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness near St. George, and Ashdown Gorge Wilderness east of Cedar City. Downhill skiing is available at Brian Head. Other recreational opportunities range from rough wilderness backpacking and horseback trips to comfortable resorts. Lakes, rivers and streams offer boating and fishing opportunities.

Wildlife tempts nature photographers, bird watchers, and game hunters. The Dixie has 1200 miles of trails designated for various kinds of travel (foot, horse, OHV), as well as groomed snowmobile trails near Brian Head.
